Disclaimer: I am no Marie Kondo but I’ve implemented some changes and I’ve seen the benefits that come from pursuing a minimalist lifestyle.
BENEFITS OF MINIMIZING YOUR LIFE
- By getting rid of the things that don’t serve you, it results in making space for what actually matters. There is not enough energy to place it on too many things that aren’t serving YOU!
- Less cleaning, less stress (personally one of my favorites!)
- You know what you have and can easily access it when needed.
- Less decisions throughout the day. People who have to make multiple decisions are more stressed out, so reduce the number of decisions you have to make.
- More clarity and space for creativity!
THINGS YOU CAN DO TO MINIMIZE YOUR LIFE
- Start with the non-emotional spaces (junk drawer, car, under bathroom sink, supply closet- you get the point) – Keep what you NEED, toss the extras. You don’t need 4 scissors, I promise.
- Declutter your closet Use the 90/90 rule for assistance. If you haven’t worn it in the last 90 days and will not be using it in the next 90 days- GET RID OF IT. Unless it’s a staple for “seasons” or travel (coats, snow boots, bikini etc.)
- Be intentional with your phone Delete useless apps. Unfollow social media accounts that don’t make you feel good about yourself. Take advantage of the technology we have and use it towards your wellbeing (meditation apps, sleep apps, productivity apps, podcasts etc). Turn off notifications and unplug when you are spending time with others.
- Emotional “clutter” This may be stored in your garage, under your bed or all over your house. Gifts or souvenirs from people you care about. It’s okay to keep things that are valuable to you but keep this space limited. Material gifts from others don’t define the relationship you have with that person. The time you spend with them defines that relationship, the conversations you have and the memories created together. This part will be the most time consuming so take your time. If you’re not ready to let go of something, that’s fine. Reflect on the object and why it means so much to you and you will determine when and if to let it go.
- Ask yourself these questions Do I NEED this? Does this bring me JOY? These questions will help you determine what should stay in your space
Don’t live for the “what ifs” or “someday”. Live for the now and make the most out of your space NOW ❤ and remember that this is YOUR minimizing journey. You will create your own rules along the way.
